The One Act Playhouse Jr. [OAPJ] program is one of few professional programs that offers formal classroom training as well as production experience for young people. This unique theatre training program for young people allows students to work directly with Broadway and Off-Broadway professionals who instruct the One Act Playhouse Jr. program. The OAPJ is currently in Residency at the Emily Dickenson School, PS #75, on Manhattan's upper west side.
The OAPJ program involves students in the production of short one-act plays to be presented for family and friends in the school's theatre. This fun, hands-on, process and performance oriented class, is an excellent opportunity for the young performer to gain experience through rehearsals, line memorization, blocking, character development, taking direction, commitment and teamwork as they are taken through the rehearsal process and tested through fully produced public performance.
Research studies point to strong relationships between learning in the arts and fundamental cognitive skills and capacities used to master other core subjects, including reading, writing, and mathematics. Studies show that kids that grow up participating in the arts score higher on the SAT by an average of 51 points on verbal and 38 points on math!
