MICHAEL BLEVINS: Plays
Playwright - Composer - Lyricist
PROVINCETOWN 2012
an evening of one-acts [Comedy/Drama]
Conceived & Adapted by
Michael Blevins
2-5M, 3-7F; 12 total characters/doubling possible; Full-length
THE STORY:
PROVINCETOWN 2012, the prolific writing team of Eugene O’Neill, Louise Bryant, Floyd Dell and Pendelton King, were all writers of one-acts originally produced by the historic Provincetown Players. Michael Blevins, Artistic Director of New York’s Group Theatre Too LLC has adapted, edited and restored this near-century old collection of critically-historic plays in an effort to make them more 2012-friendly and accessible to a new, youthful American generation of theatre goers. PROVINCETOWN 2012 is comprised of four one-act plays from the premier New York productions of the Provincetown Players, an early 20th Century theatre group of American writers and artists that changed the course of American drama and launched the careers of Eugene O’Neill and Susan Glaspell while helping to expand the Little Theatre movement across the nation. This eclectic group of plays is a full-evening of comedic and dramatic entertainment.
Marxist poet and playwright, Louise Bryant presents Life and Death as characters who roll the dice for control over the souls and fates of two young people, a poet/musician and dancer. Socialist poet and playwright, Floyd Dell, comically uncovers a couple of lovers who wrestle with their sexual urges because they are both married. . . to other people. In a dramalogue, Eugene O'Neill depicts the last stages of a domestic struggle in a unique way by presenting only one onstage character and one offstage that never appears or speaks except for a quick appearance of his arm. Once everything is said and done the wife subsides into silence and a moment later we realize that the most desperate of things has occured in the next room. Pendelton King contributes an ironic-tragedy of a washed-up prizefighter and prostitute who survive in the seediest of back rooms in the South Bronx. Also, included in the full-evening’s presentation is a two-minute “bonus” or “easter egg” play that occurs as the audience is leaving the theater!

TOYLANDFILL
a fantasy in one-act
dramatized by
Michael Blevins From an E.A. Skinner adaptation suggested by an incident in a story by Juliana Horatio Ewing
3M, 6F; 9 total [suitable for performance by young people] One-Act, 35 min.
THE STORY:
In this charming one-act fantasy, the Eagle Beagle reports to Mayor Havablast that children are being too careless with their toys. He explains that it is impossible to mend every toy that comes into the City of Broken Toys, where all broken toys are repaired, re-cycled and reused. Much to the disappointment of Mayor Havablast the broken toys are becoming so numerous they are now having to dump them in the Toylandfill. Sister Grimm is sent to bring the eleven year old twins, Kyle and Samantha Bent to the Mayor’s office where they are put on trial for the carless and willful destruction of their toys. Elektragirl, the action figure, Game Guy, an electronic toy, and Skateboard, some the twin’s abused playthings, suggest an “eye for an eye” resolution and punishment. Penguin, a stuffed-toy, testifies that she was always treated wonderfully. She calls attention to the fact that Kyle is an expert at repairing toys and pleads to have Kyle appointed the Official Repair, Re-cycle, and Reuse Handyman. Logically, this will decrease the number of toys that come to the City of Broken Toys everyday. Mayor Havablast agrees to accept Penguin’s proposal and pardons the children allowing them to go home, where Kyle, assisted by, Samantha will repair, re-cycle and re-use all the toys in the neighborhood.
